KDP AI disclosure helper

By the create-ebook team · Updated 2026-09-13

Since 2023 Amazon KDP asks every publisher whether AI tools were used to create the book. The rule is not “AI is banned”; it is “AI-generated content must be declared”. Answer the four questions to see what applies to your book.

AI-generated versus AI-assisted

KDP’s content guidelines draw one line. Content is AI-generated when an AI tool created the text, images or translations, even if you edited them substantially afterwards. Content is AI-assisted when you created it yourself and used AI to edit, refine, error-check, or to brainstorm and outline. Generated content must be disclosed on the publishing form; assisted content need not be.

A book written with create-ebook is AI-generated text by that definition, whatever you change afterwards, and its cover is an AI-generated image. You disclose both. The disclosure is a checkbox; it is not shown on the product page.

What you are still responsible for

Disclosure does not transfer responsibility. You confirm that the content follows Amazon’s guidelines, is accurate where it claims facts, and does not infringe anyone’s rights. Amazon also limits new titles to three per day per account, a rule introduced to slow low-effort uploads. Read your book before you publish it.

How to answer the form

  1. In the “Content details” step of KDP, find the question about AI-generated content.
  2. Answer Yes if any text, image or translation was AI-generated.
  3. Tick each category that applies and, when asked, the proportion (minimal, some, extensive).
  4. Publish. Nothing about the disclosure appears to buyers.

Frequently asked questions

Will disclosing AI hurt my sales?

Buyers do not see the disclosure. What they see is the sample, the cover and the reviews.

I rewrote every sentence of an AI draft. Is it still AI-generated?

Under KDP’s definition, yes. Editing does not change the origin of the content.

What if I do not disclose?

It breaches KDP’s terms. Amazon can remove the book and, for repeated violations, close the account.

Does the AI cover need to be disclosed?

Yes, as AI-generated images. A cover you designed yourself in Canva does not.

Do other platforms ask the same question?

Not in the same way. Etsy, Gumroad and Payhip have no AI disclosure field at the time of writing, though Etsy asks you to describe how digital items were made.
