Is Kindle Unlimited worth it for your ebook?

By the create-ebook team · Updated 2026-09-15

Enrolling in KDP Select is a tick box at upload that decides where your ebook can be sold for the next 90 days. Tick it and the book joins Kindle Unlimited, where subscribers read it for free and Amazon pays you per page. Leave it and you can sell everywhere else. The right answer depends on the book, not on the author, and it can be worked out in five minutes.

The arithmetic

A 200-page (KENPC) book read to the end earns about $0.90 in Kindle Unlimited. The same book sold at $2.99 earns about $2.00; at $4.99, about $3.40. So one sale is worth two to four full reads. Select wins when your book gets many more reads than it would get sales, which happens when readers are already subscribers who browse inside the program: romance, thrillers, fantasy, series.

Books that usually win in Select

  • Genre fiction, especially series where readers move to the next book at once.
  • Longer books: page reads scale with length, sales do not.
  • New authors with no audience: Kindle Unlimited readers try unknown names more readily than buyers do.

Books that usually lose in Select

  • Non-fiction tied to a business: you want the book on your site, in your emails, on Gumroad, as a lead magnet. Exclusivity blocks all of it.
  • Short books: a 40-page guide read in full pays $0.20.
  • Books whose readers are on Kobo or Apple: Canada, France, Japan, and most non-fiction buyers over 40.

A fair test

Enrol for one 90-day term, run the five free days in the first month with a small promotion, and compare page reads against the sales you had (or would expect) elsewhere. Turn off auto-renewal before the term ends if the reads do not justify the lock-in. Nothing is permanent.

What Select does not change

Paperbacks are never exclusive. You can sell the print edition anywhere while the ebook sits in Select. And the royalty on Amazon sales is the same in or out of the program.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be in Select and sell a PDF from my site?

No. Any digital version of the same content outside Amazon breaks the terms, including a free one.

How much does a page read pay?

Around $0.004 to $0.005 in the US; the exact rate is published monthly and varies by country.

Does enrolling help ranking on Amazon?

Indirectly. Page reads count toward the sales rank, so a book that gets read climbs the charts, which brings sales.

Can I leave early?

No. The term is 90 days. Turn off auto-renewal and the book leaves at the end of the term.
