Workbook: short lessons, real exercises, a checklist per chapter

By the create-ebook team · Updated 2026-09-15

A workbook teaches by doing. The reader gets a short lesson, then exercises with clear instructions and prompts to answer, then a checklist to tick before moving on. Coaches use them between sessions, trainers hand them out in programmes, and they sell on Etsy and Amazon at a higher price than a plain guide, because the reader does the work on the page.

Who makes workbooks here

  • Coaches: the companion to a 6-session programme, one chapter per session.
  • Trainers and HR: onboarding or skills workbooks for a team.
  • Therapists and wellbeing practitioners: guided journals with prompts and a method, not blank pages.
  • Etsy sellers: printable workbooks on budgeting, planning, habits.

What the pipeline does with your sentence

  1. A brief with the reader, the outcome, and 5 to 10 chapters whose exercises build on each other. You edit it.
  2. Each chapter is written as lesson plus exercises; every exercise has precise instructions and written prompts, never “think about it”.
  3. Checks: at least one real exercise per chapter, prompts present, no lesson without practice; then an editorial review.
  4. Cover and files. The PDF lays out prompts with space; the EPUB keeps them as text for e-readers.

An example plan

Sentence in: “Find 10 free hours a week as a working parent.” Plan out:

  1. Your real week (exercise: log last week, hour by hour)
  2. What actually matters this season
  3. The four time leaks and how to plug them
  4. Saying no without the guilt (scripts to fill in)
  5. Designing the new week
  6. Two weeks in: review and adjust

Print or screen

Fill-in boxes work on paper and in the PDF. For Kindle, the EPUB keeps exercises as prompts the reader answers in a notebook. Many authors sell the EPUB on Amazon and offer the printable PDF as a download from the book, which also collects an email.

Frequently asked questions

Do the exercises have space to write in the PDF?

Prompts are laid out with room below each one. For large tables or worksheets, print the PDF or duplicate the page.

Can I use it with clients?

Yes. Full commercial rights: give it to clients, sell it, include it in a programme.

How is it different from the guide?

The guide explains and gives takeaways; the workbook makes the reader do the work with exercises and a checklist per chapter. Pick the workbook when the change happens in the reader, not on the page.

Is it a low-content book?

No. Every chapter carries a lesson and written exercises; it is a real book with a method, which is why it can be priced above a journal.
