Type any word count to see how many pages it fills in a single-spaced document, a double-spaced manuscript and a printed paperback, and how long it takes to read. The numbers below the tool are the rules of thumb editors and printers use.

How many pages is a novel?

Most adult novels run 70,000 to 100,000 words, which is 230 to 330 pages in a 6 × 9 in paperback. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, whose categories many publishers borrow, counts 40,000 words and up as a novel and 17,500 to 40,000 as a novella. A 30,000-word short novel prints at about 100 pages.

Why the same text gives different page counts

Font and size change everything: Times New Roman 12 pt fits more words than Arial 12 pt. Margins, line spacing and paragraph spacing come next. Dialogue uses far more lines than narration, so a dialogue-heavy chapter takes more pages than an essay of the same length. Headings, images and tables add pages too. Treat every number here as an estimate within about 20 %.

Ebooks have no fixed pages at all: on a Kindle the text reflows to the reader's font size. Amazon shows an estimated page count on the product page instead.

Planning a book you want to publish

Amazon KDP needs at least 24 pages for a paperback, so a 6,000-word lead magnet (about 20 pages at 6 × 9 in) is better as an ebook or a PDF. A practical guide of 10,000 to 20,000 words prints at 35 to 70 pages, a comfortable size for a first non-fiction book. On create-ebook, each format has its own length range: a lead magnet is 3,000 to 6,000 words, a how-to guide 10,000 to 20,000, a novel 30,000 to 45,000, and the print file sets the exact page count for your trim size.
