How to make money with ebooks, with realistic numbers

By the create-ebook team · Updated 2026-09-15

The honest number first: the median self-published ebook sells fewer than 100 copies. The authors who earn from ebooks are not the ones with one great book; they are the ones who treat books as products with a job, a channel and a next step. Here are the four models that reliably pay, with the arithmetic of each.

Royalties per copy

Amazon pays 70 % between $2.99 and $9.99, so $2.00 on a $2.99 book and $6.90 on a $9.99 one, minus a small delivery fee. Kobo and Apple pay 70 %. From your own site through Gumroad or Stripe you keep 90 % or more. A $4.99 guide selling two copies a day on Amazon earns about $200 a month; ten such guides earn $2,000. That is the catalogue model, and it is why volume of good, specific books matters more than one perfect book.

Model 1: the Amazon catalogue

Publish several short, specific non-fiction guides in one niche, each answering one question buyers search for, each with a cover that passes the thumbnail test and a description that converts. Cross-link them in the back matter. Expect the first title to earn little and the fifth to lift the first four. The cost of production decides whether this model works: at $500 a book for a ghostwriter it rarely does; at 29 € for a generated draft you edit, it does.

Model 2: the lead magnet funnel

Give away a short book on your site in exchange for an email, then sell the course, the programme or the consultation by email. The book earns nothing directly and everything indirectly. Measure it in subscribers and in the conversion of the offer, not in sales.

Model 3: direct sales

Sell the PDF and EPUB from your own page at $9 to $49. Nobody pays that on Amazon, but an audience that trusts you pays it for a specific, actionable book with worksheets. You keep the margin and the customer’s email. Works only with an audience: a newsletter, a community, a following.

Model 4: the book as part of a service

Coaches, consultants and trainers include a book in the programme, hand it to prospects, or sell it as the entry product. The book’s job is to make the service the obvious next step. Priced at 29 € to produce and given to a prospect who becomes a client, it is the best-paid page you will write.

What does not work

  • One book, no niche, no audience, no ads: it sells to friends.
  • Low-content journals at scale: saturated since 2021.
  • Publishing generated drafts without editing: reviews find it, and Amazon’s limits on repetitive content do too.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the average self-published ebook make?

Under $100 in total, for most. The distribution is very skewed: a small share of authors with catalogues, audiences or ads earn a living.

Is it too late to start on Amazon?

For generic books, yes. For specific books in small categories, with a real reader in mind, no; that is what the categories tree rewards.

Do I need ads?

Not to start. Amazon Ads help a book that already converts; they cannot fix a cover or a description.

What does a book cost to produce with AI?

On create-ebook, 29 € for a complete draft with a cover and files, plus your editing time. See the cost calculator for the alternatives.
