How long should an ebook be?

By the create-ebook team · Updated 2026-09-15

An ebook should be as long as the job requires and not a page more. Readers finish short books and abandon long ones; Amazon shows the page count on the listing but does not rank by it; Kindle Unlimited pays per page read, which rewards length only if the pages get read. Here are the ranges that work, by format.

Why shorter sells

A 60-page guide on one specific problem, priced at $4.99, sells to someone who has that problem today. A 300-page book on the whole subject asks for a weekend and a decision. Reviews of short, specific books say “exactly what I needed”; reviews of long ones say “could have been half the length”. The exception is fiction, where readers who love a world want more of it.

What Amazon shows

The listing shows a page count Amazon estimates from the file (about 250 words per page for a Kindle book). Under 30 pages it shows a “Short read” label in some categories, which sets expectations. There is no minimum length for publishing, but a book under about 2,500 words tends to draw refund requests unless priced at $0.99.

Kindle Unlimited and length

Page reads pay per page, so a 300-page novel read to the end earns about $1.35 and a 60-page guide about $0.27. If Kindle Unlimited is your channel, length pays, provided the book keeps readers to the last page. Padding does not help: readers stop, and stopped pages are not paid.

Chapters

Non-fiction chapters of 1,500 to 2,500 words read well on a phone; fiction chapters of 2,000 to 4,000. Ten chapters of 1,800 words is a real book of about 70 pages. AI ebook generators work in these ranges for a reason: each chapter can be planned, written and checked as a unit.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 30-page ebook too short to sell?

Not if it solves one problem and is priced accordingly ($0.99 to $2.99). It is too short to carry $9.99.

How many words is a Kindle page?

Amazon estimates around 250 for the listing page count. KENPC, used for Kindle Unlimited pay, is a different normalised count and is often higher.

Should I split a long book into a series?

Often yes: three 25,000-word volumes sell and rank better than one 75,000-word book, and readers who finish volume one buy volume two.

What length does create-ebook produce?

3,000 to 30,000 words depending on the format: lead magnet, guide, workbook, course companion or short novel. See the format pages.
