Book Cover Dimensions for Kindle and KDP Paperback Editions

By the create-ebook team · Updated 2026-10-23

A warm, softly lit writer’s desk with a laptop, blank paperback cover proof, e-reader mockup, printed pages, ruler, and coffee cup.

Book cover dimensions change with the edition you publish. A Kindle ebook needs a front-cover image, while a KDP paperback needs one full file containing the back cover, spine, front cover, and bleed.

Set the trim size and final page count before commissioning artwork or building a cover. That sequence prevents a common KDP upload failure: a correct-looking design placed on a canvas that is too narrow for its spine.

1. Plan book cover dimensions for each edition

Start by listing every edition separately. Do not reuse a Kindle front cover as a paperback wrap file, because KDP needs different artwork dimensions and different content around the edges.

  • Kindle ebook: one front-cover image.
  • Paperback: back cover, spine, front cover, and bleed in one flat file.
  • Hardcover: a separate template, even when the trim size matches the paperback.

For an ebook, also decide whether the interior is reflowable or fixed-layout before finalizing the design. This guide on which ebook format to write helps make that choice before you prepare the upload files.

2. Use Amazon ebook cover dimensions that display well

Amazon recommends an ebook cover with a height of 2,560 pixels and a height-to-width ratio of 1.6:1. At that ratio, the working canvas is 1,600 × 2,560 pixels. Export the front cover as a JPEG or TIFF, using RGB color.

A smaller image can pass the technical minimum in some cases, yet it can look soft in store previews. Keep type away from the outer edge, use readable contrast at thumbnail size, and review the cover at about 100 pixels wide before uploading.

Amazon changes technical guidance from time to time, so confirm current image requirements in KDP Help before you export a final file.

3. Build the paperback wrap from trim size and bleed

Choose the paperback trim size first. Common options include 5.5 × 8.5 inches for compact nonfiction and 6 × 9 inches for many trade paperbacks. KDP's full cover width is calculated as back-cover width + spine width + front-cover width + 0.25 inches of horizontal bleed. Full cover height is trim height + 0.25 inches.

That 0.25-inch allowance represents 0.125 inches of bleed on each outside edge. The spine itself does not receive extra bleed. Use the template generated for your exact print setup rather than estimating where the barcode or spine guides will fall.

6 × 9 in9.25 in12.25 in

4. Calculate the spine after the page count is final

Paperback spine width comes from the final page count, paper type, and KDP's production specifications. A manuscript revised from 180 to 220 pages needs a wider wrap file, even though its trim size has not changed. Generate a fresh KDP cover template once the interior PDF is locked.

KDP requires at least 24 pages for a paperback. Spine text is available only when the book has 100 pages or more, so avoid placing essential information there for a shorter book. Check the final PDF page total after front matter, blank pages, and the end matter are included.

Page density affects the spine as well as reading comfort. If you are still shaping chapter length and layout, read a whole example chapter to see how a finished chapter can be paced on the page.

5. Export the KDP cover files it accepts

For a Kindle ebook, upload the front cover only as a JPEG or TIFF. For a paperback, upload the complete wrap as a print-ready PDF, JPEG, or TIFF. A PDF is usually the safest handoff from a designer because it preserves placed text and vector elements when exported correctly.

Use the cover template as a guide layer only, then remove it before export. Do not include crop marks, printer marks, guide lines, or a manually added barcode. KDP places the barcode in its reserved area when required.

6. Preview the upload before approving publication

Upload the interior and cover together in KDP because the Print Previewer checks the wrap against the page count and selected print options. Inspect the front cover, spine, barcode area, and every edge at full preview size. If you change paper, trim size, or page count, download a new template and export the cover again.

For the wider upload sequence, including manuscript preparation and preview checks, follow Publish an ebook on Amazon KDP, step by step. Keep the approved cover source file, the exported print PDF, and the ebook JPEG in a clearly named project folder.

Closing check before you publish

Lock the interior first, generate the KDP template from that final setup, and then size the paperback cover. For the ebook, use a separate 1,600 × 2,560-pixel front cover. A short preflight at this stage is far quicker than rebuilding a wrap after KDP flags the spine or bleed.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Amazon Kindle ebook cover be?

Amazon recommends a 1.6:1 height-to-width ratio, commonly 1,600 × 2,560 pixels. Upload a front-cover image as a JPEG or TIFF and check the current requirements in KDP Help before publishing.

How do I calculate paperback cover width for KDP?

Add the back-cover width, spine width, front-cover width, and 0.25 inches for outside bleed. KDP's template generator supplies the exact spine measurement after you select trim size, paper type, and page count.

Does page count change a paperback cover?

Yes. Each additional page increases the spine width, so the full wrap becomes wider. Re-export the cover whenever the final interior PDF gains or loses pages.

Can I put text on a KDP paperback spine?

KDP allows spine text for paperbacks with at least 100 pages. Keep the title and author name inside the template's spine safe area, because text near the fold can shift or become hard to read.

Does KDP accept a PNG cover file?

For Kindle ebook covers, use JPEG or TIFF. For paperback covers, KDP accepts PDF, JPEG, or TIFF; a print-ready PDF is commonly used for a full wrap designed in professional layout software.
